Hmm, I don't think this is possible. If I'm not mistaken, HTML emails are

essentially MIME attachments in an email -- all email clients should now

support MIME attachments.


This issue however, is not MIME support, but what the email client does

certain MIME types.


In the worst case, if you sent an HTML email the user would see an

attachment of type "text/html" in the mail (probably as an icon) rather than

the rendered HTML itself. Double clicking on this icon would open the page

in the associated application (the browser).


Some mail clients are cleverer wrt certain MIME types (like netscape mail,

it will render images as well as HTML attachment in the mail window).


You might like to try another way that may give some results:


Check the "X-Mailer" header on the emails/posting of your survey sample (an

accomplished perl programmer could knock up a script to trawl through a news

group and produce a report).


This should give you an idea of the spread of different mail clients, then

you could just check each one manuallyb for HTML-email compliance.


Of course, none of this is failsafe as some mail clients don't give

"X-Mailer" headers and some who use HTML-email compliant email clients could

still turn off the feature if they wanted to.
