Hi all


It's long been obvious that there are enough 'Cool site of the day' type

awards to fill a home page or three with poxy links and logos, but now

they're proliferating off-line, too. .net has to hold its hands up for

its two-year involvement with the Yell Awards (this year Internet.Works

has the honour), Internet Magazine does its own, so does The Times, and

New Media Age. UK Press Gazette has a new media award, One World has

non-profit new media awards, and no doubt Campaign/Revolution/Marketing

will do some too. And they're just the ones that spring to mind from the

press I'm immediately involved with. Oh yeah - and BAFTA are doing

something now, too, aren't they?


Of course, awards are great because we all get to put on our best bib

'n' tucker and stagger along to swanky dos at the company's (for many of

you, read 'our own') expense. But apart from having a laugh, are the

awards worth anything? There are so many that the PR value outside the

sponsoring publication is nigh-on non-existent. Every time a service

provider or Web site PR company phones me up to tell me that they've

been voted number one or that they've won an award, I laugh. Hahaha.

Like that. Ha. Because next week somebody else will be number one or

will have won yet another bloody new media award.


Self-congratulatory back-slapping and self-serving face-stuffing

booze-quaffing hilarity aside, which of the awards (if any) do you

reckon are actually worth winning? I mean, they're not exactly the

Oscars, are they?
