Brand Banter: The Evolution of Content Marketing

Twitter Banter: Tesco Mobile vs Jaffa Cakes

When Twitter conversations between brands ends up on Buzzfeed, does this represent the content marketer's highest honour or this year's trendiest marketing tactic has jumped the shark?

As the link inevitably made its way around the office there was enough chuckling to make me think it's very much the former.

Twitter Banter Snippet

It's worth scanning the full exchange with, inevitably witty commentary from Buzzfeedwhilst watch the social media pro's stay in 'character'.

Credit where it's due to the people behind the twitter accounts of @tescomobile @realjaffacakes @YorkshireTea @CadburyUK @PhileasFogg for engaing in some proper banter, that might still be going on, without resorting to clench-worthy marketing. And Riccardo Esposito for unknowingly creating a Twitter meme.

I can't help thinking that some unfortunate brand managers are going to find proposals hit their inbox with staged re-workings of this for their 2014 campaigns. Cynical, moi?

UPDATE: Our cousins on the other side of the Atlantic are getting in on the banterage, too. T-mobile and AT&T are duking it out for customer love.

Great example of why social media is vital for brand rep

This is a great example of why social media is a valuable platform to develop brand reputation. Of course this colloquial banter can't be expected from corporate financial advisory firms, however it still proves that audiences expect, and love, personality to shine through brands social media profiles. And of course, kudos to the social teams in this stream!

Nice to see brands executing

Nice to see brands executing with a broader purpose than a product push. As you say, brand managers are likely to be getting some interesting propositions next year. But for which group of companies would you contrive such a dialogue? Woofwagen versus the Dulux dog?
